How to choose your mattress?

A good mattress should erase all the tensions of your day, promote the relaxation of your muscles, be comfortable and provide sufficient support for your back and spine. In order to find the mattress that will suit you best and fulfill all its functions, it is important to know certain things.

How to choose the dimensions of your mattress?

The dimensions of your mattress must be chosen according to different criteria:

  • The space available in your room
  • A mattress the same size as your bed
  • Adapted to your body shape
  • A mattress that is neither too firm nor too soft
  • Corresponding to your preferences

If you would like more information regarding choosing your mattress, we invite you to consult our article on “how to choose your mattress” .

Choosing the firmness of your mattress according to your body type

To have optimal support during your sleep, your mattress should be neither too soft nor too firm. Indeed, your mattress's mission is to keep your spine straight and thus prevent you from pain due to bad posture during your sleep.

However, the ideal support you need to sleep well does not depend solely on your mattress. To choose your bedding well , you must also take into account your body shape, in particular your height and weight.

Please note: if you are sleeping as a couple on your double mattress, we advise you to choose the density of your mattress according to the build of the strongest person in the couple (the tallest height and the heaviest weight).

Weight/Height < 50 kg 50-60 kg 60-70 kg 70-80 kg 80-90 kg 90-100 kg > 100 kg
< 1.50 m Flexible Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Farm Farm Farm
1.50-1.60 m Flexible Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Farm Farm Farm
1.60-1.70 m Flexible Flexible Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Farm Farm
1.70-1.80 m Flexible Flexible Flexible Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Farm
1.80-1.90 m Flexible Flexible Flexible Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Farm
1.90-2.00 m Flexible Flexible Flexible Semi-Firm Semi-Firm Farm
> 2.00 m Flexible Flexible Semi-firm Semi-firm Farm

A mattress with balanced support will suit all types of sleepers, regardless of their size or build. Indeed, a high-end balanced mattress adapts as well to your body shape as to your sleeping position (on your back, on your side or on your stomach).

Choose the comfort of your mattress according to your preferences

The welcome of your mattress is defined by the first impression you get when you lie down on it. The welcome of your mattress can be:

  • Enveloping (Very soft)
  • Soft
  • Tonic (Firm)

The mattress's feel must be clearly differentiated from the support it provides you during your sleep. Indeed, a mattress with an enveloping feel can have firm support, giving you a soft feeling while supporting your body firmly for good alignment of the vertebrae.

Generally, you can refer to the following table:

TECHNOLOGY WELCOME FIRMNESS OF SUPPORT
HR Foam Tonic ☻☻☻☺☺
Latex Soft ☻☻☻☻☺
Memory foam Soft or tonic ☻☻☻☻☻
Pocket springs Tonic to very tonic ☻☻☻☻☻
Natural latex Very soft ☻☻☻☻☻

Choosing the ticking for your mattress

The ticking is a determining factor in the quality of the reception of your mattress. Indeed, it is the external fabric envelope of your mattress. It can be made of different materials: cotton, polyester, viscose, Tencel® or lyocell… and the fabrics can be of different qualities: jersey, stretch, velvet, etc.

In order to choose your bedding well , it is important to take into account the materials used so that they correspond to your needs. Here are the main characteristics of the materials and fabrics used to make the fabric covering our mattresses:

  • Cotton - hydrophilic material, soft and strong, it therefore absorbs moisture better and does not retain heat. It is ideal for good bedding hygiene and its maintenance is very easy.
  • Polyester - widely used for removable ticking, polyester has the advantage of being very affordable and durable. It is less efficient in terms of breathability and ventilation of the mattress.
  • Viscose - viscose is a plant-based textile similar to silk. Shiny and very soft, viscose has thermoregulating properties and a high absorbency. It will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. Resistant to friction and very durable over time, this makes it an ideal material for hygienic bedding.
  • Tencel or lyocell - lyocell, known under the brand name Tencel, is a fabric made from eucalyptus fibers. Very soft and breathable, these fibers are ideal for regulating body temperature and for its hypoallergenic properties.
  • Jersey - Jersey is a soft and elastic fabric that is very versatile. Its stretchy knit has different aspects on both sides, originally knitted from wool, it can also be made from cotton or synthetic fibers.
  • Strech - Stretch fabric is a stretch fabric made from a small percentage of elastane. Very flexible and elastic, it allows your body to fully benefit from the multi-support of memory foam.
  • Velvet - velvet fabric is a fabric whose hairs are similar to plush. Very soft, this thick fabric is ideal in winter or for people who are sensitive to the cold. Indeed, it retains heat very well and promises cocooning moments.

In addition, it should be noted that during their design, most ticking undergoes treatments to improve the hygiene of your bedding or to reinforce your safety during your sleep. These may be anti-bacterial, anti-mite, anti-mold or fire retardant treatments.

In any case, it is important to protect the ticking of your mattress with bed linen (fitted sheet, set, etc.)

Choosing the firmness and density of your mattress

Choosing the right bedding involves choosing the mattress technology that matches your preferences. The components have different comfort and reception, here is a summary of Sampur mattresses:

    Foam mattress

First of all, it is important to note that the firmness and support of a foam mattress comes from the compression of the mattress and not from the density of the foam. Thus, if the compression is weak, the mattress will be softer. Conversely, the stronger the compression, the firmer the mattress will be. Be careful not to choose a mattress that is too firm for your body type, because a mattress that is too firm is bad for blood circulation.

The density of the foam will be a guarantee of quality and will allow a longer life of the mattress. To ensure that the foam of the mattress does not settle over time, the density of the foam of a double bed will be chosen according to the heaviest sleeper in the couple.

    • Standard density: from 20 kg/m³ to 25 kg/m³
    • Higher density: from 35 kg/m³ to 50 kg/m³
    • Excellent density: from 50 kg/m³

High resilience foam (HR) or polyurethane foam is a high-quality foam that returns to its original shape as soon as there is no pressure applied to it. The higher its density, the firmer and more resistant the mattress.

Viscoelastic foam, also known as “memory foam”, is a technology that was designed by NASA. The density of its foam is generally very high. The main characteristic of this foam is that it takes the exact shape of the body and absorbs pressure points, it adapts to body movements and reduces muscle tension. The memory foam mattress memorizes the shape of the body and will take longer to return to its initial shape compared to other foams.

    Spring mattress

To estimate the quality and firmness of a spring mattress , two parameters must be taken into account:

    • the number of springs - a double mattress must have at least 300, but this varies depending on the type of springs and the firmness required
    • the diameter of the steel wire - the wider the wire, the firmer the spring and therefore the mattress will be

Pocket springs are springs individually wrapped in fabric. A standard size mattress can have from 400 to 1200, the more springs there are, the firmer the mattress support will be. This technology allows for greater sleeping independence, so you feel less movement from the person sleeping next to you and this allows you to have a deep and restful sleep.

Carbon fiber springs are a new patented technology. These springs are more resistant over time, and they regain their shape better. They allow better sleeping independence for an ever more pleasant and restorative sleep.

    Latex mattress

The density of the latex determines the firmness of your mattress:

    • Soft support: from 65 kg/m³ to 75 kg/m³
    • Firm support: 75 to 80 kg/m³
    • Very firm support: from 80 kg/m³ to 83 kg/m³

Latex, whether of plant or synthetic origin, is a naturally hypoallergenic material that allows your mattress to breathe. The latex mattress has a medium-firm support and provides excellent sleeping independence for a couple.

Having a duvet that is adapted to your needs offers many advantages and will allow you to sleep in your favorite conditions! It means having a duvet that is a little bigger than your bed, so that it does not let cool air through at night. Choosing the right heat index for your duvet (very warm, warm, temperate or light) will help you spend your night according to the temperature you prefer.

Choose the size of your duvet according to your mattress

The dimensions of the duvet play an important role in choosing your bedding. There are 4 standard duvet sizes, the choice of size will vary depending on the size of your bed:
