  • douleurs + fatigue = mauvais soutien
  • allergies + inconfort = matelas usé ou insalubre

Si plusieurs de ces signes apparaissent, c’est souvent le signal qu’il faut changer de matelas pour retrouver un sommeil réparateur et éviter les douleurs.

A good night's sleep is essential for a good day. However, sleeping on a worn or substandard mattress can lead to less restful sleep. But what are the symptoms of a bad mattress? Sleeping on an old mattress, for example, can affect your breathing and your psychological state before going to bed at night. In this article, we help you understand the signs of a poor quality mattress.

Symptoms of a bad mattress

There are many symptoms caused by an old mattress. Here are the six main symptoms you may experience when sleeping on a low-end mattress:

  • Neck and back pain: If you experience multiple neck and back pains , this means that your spine and neck are no longer properly supported by your mattress.
  • Noisy breathing: If you have breathing problems at night, such as sleep apnea, it may be caused by your old mattress.
  • Eye irritation and stuffy nose: If you wake up with a stuffy nose and red eyes, it is very likely that your mattress is covered in dust mites, unless you have a cold of course.
  • Wake-up tired: If you wake up tired, it probably means that you are experiencing micro-awakenings during the night due to the discomfort of your mattress.
  • Skin problems: If you are stressed due to lack of sleep or poor sleep, it can cause wrinkles or acne.
  • Difficulty falling asleep: if you experience unpleasant sensations while falling asleep, or even if you move around at night, your mattress is not or no longer suited to your body shape.

Signs of Mattress Aging

Mattress sagging

This can cause lower back pain or muscle stiffness. It is possible that our spine is not aligned due to the lack of sufficient support from the mattress.

The same applies to the deformation of the mattress, when it has a bump on the edges or even on the top.

Itching or difficulty breathing

Dust mites and dust accumulate in old mattresses, which can cause allergies. Therefore, when you sleep on a worn-out mattress, you may experience itchy eyes, skin rashes, and difficulty breathing.

Mold, pollen, dust, mites and other microscopic elements accumulate over time. So, the older your bedding, the greater the risk of allergic reactions. Even if you have a hypoallergenic mattress, after a very long period of use, its capabilities fade.

Foam deformation

Over time, the foam in mattresses wears out and doesn't bounce back as well as it did before. A good mattress should help support your spine by forming a relatively straight natural line. However, as the mattress ages, your body can sink into the foam. If you spend a few hours on it, your spine will get into a bad posture.

If you feel this way, it may be time to change your mattress. We advise you not to persist in sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress, which could create long-term damage, both muscular and spinal, increasing the risk of pain and lack of sleep.

The consequences of a low quality mattress

The quality of the mattress plays a major role in how well you fall asleep which can be problematic considering we spend about 1/3 of our time in bed each day.

Unfortunately, many people regularly complain about lack of sleep. The culprit behind this unpleasant feeling is the poor condition of the mattress. If your mattress starts to form fluff or hollows, you should definitely consider replacing it. This will save you from some side effects, such as blood pressure problems or muscle pain.

This way, the quality of your sleep will no longer be conditioned by the signs of aging of your old mattress. On the other hand, snoring, cold feet, breathing, etc. are other signs of sleeping on a poor quality mattress.

The lifespan of a mattress

How often you change your mattress is also an important criterion. The average lifespan of a mattress is about 10 years. Beyond this time, your mattress will lose comfort and may cause you pain. A worn mattress will degrade your quality of sleep. If you want to know more about the lifespan of a mattress, you can come and see our article “What is the lifespan of a mattress?”.

Hope all these explanations will help you know when to change your mattress.
