How to choose the right pillow for a restful sleep?
Because you don't choose a good pillow by chance…
We often talk about the mattress, but the pillow also plays an essential role in the quality of your sleep. It supports your cervical spine, aligns your backbone, and helps you avoid muscle tension when you wake up. But how do you choose the right pillow from all the shapes, fillings, and firmness levels on the market?
This guide was designed to help you see things more clearly and find the pillow suited to your body type, sleep position, and preferences from our entire range of pillows and bolster pillows.
When should you change your pillow?
A pillow does not last forever. On average:
| Pillow type | Estimated lifespan | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic | 1 to 2 years | Rapid sagging, loss of volume |
| Memory foam | 2 to 4 years | Loss of density, less bounce |
| Latex | 4 to 6 years | High durability, but sensitive to moisture |
| Feather / down | 5 to 10 years | Loss of loft, unpleasant odors |
Keep in mind: if your pillow has lost its loft, no longer regains its shape, or causes neck or back pain, it is time to replace it.
Hygiene and comfort: why shouldn't you wait to change it?
We sweat up to 0.5 L of water per night, some of which is absorbed by the pillow. Add to that dust, dust mites, and repeated friction, and you have the perfect cocktail for allergies or waking up with aches.
A worn, poorly maintained, or unsuitable pillow can affect your sleep much more than you think.
Should you choose a bolster pillow? A guide to using it correctly
Often overlooked in bedding guides, the bolster pillow is actually a very useful sleeping accessory. It can complement a pillow, improve posture during sleep, or even serve a decorative purpose. But what is it really used for, and how do you choose the right one?
What is a bolster pillow used for?
The bolster is a long, cylindrical cushion, generally placed under the neck, back, or legs, or used to supplement a standard pillow. At Sampur, just like our pillows, we have designed a complete range of bolster pillows. It can:
-
Elevate the upper body, useful in case of acid reflux or snoring
-
Relieve the legs, when placed under the knees
-
Provide comfort while sitting in bed
-
Support the cervical spine as a supplement to a pillow
-
Serve as a prop for reading or relaxing
It is also used by some people as a cuddle pillow to relax or make falling asleep easier.
What size bolster pillow should you choose?
The bolster is chosen primarily based on the width of the bed, to ensure good support and even distribution of the filling:
| Bed size | Recommended bolster size |
|---|---|
| Single bed (90 cm) | 90 × 40 cm |
| 140 cm bed | 137 × 40 cm |
| 160 cm bed or larger | 150 × 40 cm |
Tip: A bolster slightly smaller than the width of the bed allows for a better fit inside specific pillowcases.
When should you use a bolster pillow instead of a standard pillow?
-
As a supplement to a pillow: to elevate the head or upper body
-
In the lateral position: as a positioning cushion for the legs or pelvis
-
For relaxation: to support the lumbar or cervical spine
-
For decor: it can also dress up the bed nicely with a beautiful cover
A bolster pillow does not replace a good pillow, but it can enhance the overall comfort of your bedding, especially if you are looking for more support or a more aligned posture.
What firmness of pillow or bolster should you choose?
Firmness depends on your sleeping position, body type, and personal comfort.
| Sleeping position | Recommended firmness | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| On the stomach | Soft | To avoid arching the neck and limit pressure |
| On the back | Plush to firm | To keep the head in alignment without excessive elevation |
| On the side | Plush to firm | To fill the space between the head and the mattress |
The larger your build, the more you will need a firm and thick pillow.
The ergonomic pillow: ideal for sensitive necks
If you regularly wake up with neck tension, headaches, or a stiff neck, an ergonomic (or cervical) pillow can make all the difference.
Thanks to its curved shape that follows the natural curve of the neck, it allows for optimal alignment of the cervical vertebrae. It is often made of memory foam, which molds to the shape of your head without creating pressure points.
Good to know: at Sampur, you can test our ergonomic pillows during a trial period. Not convinced? You can return it.
Should you choose a memory foam pillow?
The memory foam pillow perfectly contours to your head and neck, providing tailored support and lasting comfort night after night.
Advantages:
-
Precise support for the neck and head
-
Reduction of muscle tension
-
Superior longevity compared to a classic pillow
-
Ideal for neck or back pain
Points to check:
-
The firmness level
-
The shape (classic, ergonomic, rectangular)
-
The size suited to your bed and body type
Which pillow filling should you choose?
The filling directly influences the comfort, durability, maintenance, and even the price of your pillow. Much like with a mattress: it's not the thickness that matters most, but what is inside.
| Filling | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Feather / down | Very good loft, natural, durable | Requires proper maintenance, possible allergen |
| Synthetic polyester | Hypoallergenic, lightweight, economical | Less durable, loses volume |
| Memory foam | Ergonomic support, reduces pressure points | Not washable, heavier |
| Latex | Breathable, bouncy, natural anti-dust mite | Firmer, heavier |
Tip: if you have allergies, prefer a synthetic pillow treated for anti-dust mites or one made of natural latex. Discover our collection of synthetic pillows.
What size and shape of pillow should you choose?
For adults:
-
60 × 60 cm: classic square format, perfect for reading or maintaining a sitting position
-
40 × 60 cm or 40 × 70 cm: rectangular format, recommended for sleeping (better for cervical alignment)
For children:
-
No pillow before age 2.
-
From age 2: flat, rectangular, hypoallergenic, non-memory foam pillow. At Sampur, we have a bedding range specifically designed for children.
Square, rectangular, or ergonomic: what to choose?
-
Square → ideal for sitting positions (reading, TV)
-
Rectangular → ideal for sleeping, as it does not lift the shoulders
-
Ergonomic → recommended for neck pain, or if you sleep on your back or side
Care for your pillow and bolster: the right habits
A well-maintained pillow = healthier sleep and a product that lasts.
| Pillow type | Washing | Drying |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic / feathers | Machine wash at 30°C (delicate) | Flat drying, in the sun if possible |
| Memory foam | Not washable / Removable, washable cover | Protect with a washable cover |
| Latex | Spot cleaning | Air out regularly |
Tip: air out your pillow and bolster every morning and wash the cover every 2 weeks to limit dust mites.
